British Bilbo Baggins actor Sir Ian Holm died “peacefully” in hospital on Friday aged 88, his agent Alex Irwin announced.

He was beloved by audiences as Bilbo Baggins within the Lord of the Rings trilogy and therefore the Hobbit. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Chariots of fireside and first reached wide audiences in Alien. His death on Friday was associated with paralysis agitans, his agent, Alex Irwin, told NPR.

Ian Holm could play everyone from Lear to an android to a hobbit. He told NPR’s All Things Considered in 2002 that he was less curious about fame than in being an honest actor.

Holm secured worldwide fame for his role as Bilbo Baggins in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and supported J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. He also briefly appeared because of the elder Bilbo in parts of the later trilogy “The Hobbit.”

His other movie roles included Father Cornelius in “The Fifth Element,” android Ash in “Alien,” Napoleon in “Time Bandits,” writer Carroll in ”Dreamchild” and a royal physician in “The Madness of King George.”

Holm won a British Academy Film Award and received a
supporting-actor Oscar nomination for portraying athletics coach Sam Mussabini within the blockbuster 1982 film “Chariots of fireside .” The actor was also nominated for 6 British Academy of Film and tv Arts (BAFTA) awards.

BAFTA said it had been “very sorry” to listen to his death.

Therefore, Holm was born in Goodmayes, Essex, the united kingdom on September 12, 1931. He was born to Scottish parents Jean Wilson and James Harvey Cuthbert. Holm had five children.

Excelling on stage

He was born outside London in 1931, Ian Holm joined the Royal Shakespeare Company when it had been founded three decades later and was celebrated for his stage work. His portrayal of Lenny within the premiere production of Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming won him a Tony Award after its transfer from the West End to Broadway. But he suffered a severe case of fear in 1976, during a performance of The Iceman Cometh, and largely turned to movie and tv work afterward. He didn’t return to the stage for nearly 20 years.

However, in his mid-40s, he became known to film audiences, beginning together with his role in Alien because of the android Ash. From then on, he often alternated between appearing in big Hollywood box office hits. And more offbeat films, including Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter.

Along with his Oscar nomination, his role because the athletics coach Sam Mussabini in Chariots of fireside earned him a special award at the Cannes festival and a BAFTA prize.

Furthermore, he was appointed CBE in 1997 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth a year later.
