Cray grew up in a military family. He studied piano as a teen. He played guitar in rock bands in the late 1960s, inspired largely by British Invasion groups and the BEATLES.

With bassist Richard Cousins, he formed his own band in 1974. He recorded his debut album for Tomato in 1978, and it was released two years later. The next two records, which were recorded for different labels, featured a “soft” style of blues played with elements of soul and mainstream pop music, which would bring Cray fame in a few years, but they went unnoticed at the time.

The 1983 album was a moderate success, but it was his involvement in the Alligator band, which brought together three guitarists in the studio: Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Cray himself, Showdawn, that brought him real fame. Over a million copies of the Grammy-winning album have been sold.

Crai’s next solo album, which was released on a major label, was also platinum-certified. Several songs from it have charted in the United States. Cray’s song Telephone Booth was recorded by Albert Collins and blues legend Albert King (Albert King ). Eric Clapton ( by Eric Clapton ) released a new version of his hit, Bad Influence Kray, for which he was invited to perform in London concerts and on tour in 1987.

Involvement in the film Hail! Hail! Rocknroll alongside rock ‘n’ roll and rock music stars was filmed for Chuck Berry’s jubilee, confirming Cray’s stellar status as certified platinum on his next albums.
