Emmitt James Smith III is a retired American professional football running back who played for the Dallas Cowboys for 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) during the 1990s and 2000s (he also played for the Arizona Cardinals at the end of his career). After being released by the Cowboys in 2002 after twelve seasons, Smith spent the last two years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith was adamant about not quitting his job only because he had retired from football. In 2005, he became a real estate developer. He joined up with another football player, Roger Staubach. Smith/Cypress Partners LP was established as a result of their collaboration.

Smith began working on several television ventures after retiring from football. In 2005, he agreed to join NFL Total Access as a studio analyst. In 2007, he was a studio analyst on ESPN for another sport’s broadcast.
