Club Career
In the 1989 NFL Draft, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints. On September 3, 1990, he was waived by the Saints and spent most of the year working as a coaching assistant for Princeton.
In 1991, Garrett started at quarterback for San Antonio Riders and began the sixth and seventh games. On 4th June 1991- he was signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League.
In 1992, he became part of the Dallas Cowboys scouting department. Similarly, he was a part of the 1993 and 1995 Super Bowl-winning teams.
In 2000, he was signed as a free agent by the New York Giants to backup Kerry Collins. On 15th March 2004 Garrett signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Coaching Career
After retiring from playing career he became a quarterback coach for Miami Dolphins in 2005 season. In 2007, he got hire by the Dallas Cowboys as an offensive coordinator. In 2008, he interviewed for the head coaching job of the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons and received offers from both.
On 8th November 2010, he was named as interim head coach of the Cowboys after fourth-year head coach Wade Phillips. On 13th January 2015, Garrett agreed to stay in Dallas for 5 more years.
Garrett was named the NFL Coach of the Year for the 2016 season.
