Julie Ertz is an American soccer player who plays for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States women’s national soccer team(USWNT). As of 2019, she has made over 90 appearances scoring 19 times for her country. She won the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2019.
Julie Ertz was born on April 6, 1992, in Phoenix, Arizona, the United States to parents Kristi Johnston(mother) and David Johnston(father). As of 2019, her age is 27. Julie Ertz started her soccer career from college level. On January 17th, 2014, she signed for the Chicago Red Stars in the first round of the 2014 NWSL College Draft. On April 19 of the same year, she made her debut in a match against the Western New York Flash and scored the winning goal for the club in her first-ever appearance.
During the 2014 season, she played in 21 matches and scored 2 goals for the Red Stars.
In 2015, she missed almost half of the NWSL season due to her commitments with the USWNT at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. In the 2017 season, Ertz debuted in a new role in the attacking midfield position from where she scored the winning goal in a 1–0 victory over FC Kansas City in week 2. She was once again named to the NWSL Second XI for the season after leading Chicago to the championship semi-final.
In 2018, she made 15 appearances for the club and they reached the playoffs where they lost once again. However, she was named in the 2018 NWSL Second XI.
In 2012, Ertz earned a U20 call-up and scored one goal against Switzerland at the La Manga Tournament in Spain. In 2012, at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, she made 13 appearances and scored 4 goals. Furthermore, she captained her side in the won the Bronze Ball award. She made her senior team debut on February 9, 2013, against Scotland as a substitute.
In the 2015 FIFA World Cup, she was in the starting 11 in each and every match of the tournament and was also named in the FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Team. The United States Women’s national team also won the World Cup.
In early 2017, she was shifted from center back to a defensive midfield position as the coach experimented with new formations. She found amazing success in the role and in 2017 she was named the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year award.
In May 2019, unsurprisingly, Julie was named in the final 23-player roster for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. She even scored in the 3-0 win over Chile. In 2019, Julie won US Soccer’s Female Player of the Year award beating the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle, Carli Lloyd, Alyssa Naeher, and Alex Morgan.
