He started playing football from an early age. he played high school football at the Academy of Holy Angeles in Richfield, Minnesota. He also played for the Pittsburgh Panthers Football team under head coach Walt Harris. From 2002 to 2003, he got widely consider one of the best wide receivers of college.

His professional career began in 2004 after he got draft by the Arizona Cardinals as the third overall pick in the NFL draft. Fritzgerald made his NFL debut against the St.Louis Rams in the season opener on September 12.
