Scott was born to Hope Gordon (mother), a homemaker, journalist, and actress in the Haddonfield Plays and Players Theatre Troupe, and his father Francis Ford Patterson IV is an advertising executive. He attended Rutgers University and pursued a degree in comparative literature. He dropped out to play baseball for community colleges in Florida and Arizona. Scott got draft into the minor baseball leagues and play with The New York Yankees, The Atlanta Braves, and The Texas Rangers for eight years before being drop.

Between 1980 to 1986, Scott spent seven years as a professional pitcher in baseball in the minor league, starting in the Triple-A (the lowest before the major leagues). Also, he plays with seven different minor league teams in two major league farm systems and got the name as four All-Star Teams (two with Atlanta and two with the New York Yankees). Similarly, in the first round (12th overall) of the 1980 Major League Baseball draft, Scott got originally nominate by the Atlanta Braves.

He played with their Class A Anderson Braves in his first professional season in 1980. Scott won 13 consecutive games in 1981 as a starting pitcher between Class A Durham and Double-A Savannah to set a Braves record to start for most consecutive wins. Also, he was a professional pitcher for Little Big League in 1994.

Moreover, he appeared on the big screen in “Her Best Move,” “Little Big League,” “Three Wishes,” “Highway 395” and “Rhapsody in Bloom.”On television, in addition to his memorable role as Luke on “Gilmore Girls,” Patterson appeared on “Seinfeld,” “Will & Grace,” “It’s Like, You Know” and “Fired Up.” Furthermore, he along with Lauren Graham made their guest appearance in Seinfield.

Furthermore, he appeared as guest roles in “Arli$$” and “Get Real,”. Likewise, he performed the voice of the character Lieutenant Farraday in the 2004 animated series “Justice League Unlimited”.

In addition, Patterson writes music and paints in his spare time. In early 2008, his gallery show of completed works was shown.
